How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Lake Charles?

What stump grinding usually costs, how size, access and extras change the price, and how to compare quotes from Lake Charles, LA providers.

Updated 5 min read

Stump grinding is one of the smaller jobs on a home to-do list, and it still has a surprisingly wide price range. A thin stump beside a driveway and a wide hardwood stump behind a fence are not the same job. This guide explains what moves the price so you can read a quote in Lake Charles and know what is in it.

The short version

National cost guides put a typical stump at roughly a hundred to a few hundred dollars. One guide gives a typical range of about $140 to $450 per stump, with an average around $240, and says a large hardwood stump in difficult conditions can climb toward $1,000. The same guide lists a stump of about six inches across at roughly $95 to $275, a twelve inch stump at roughly $275 to $350, and a twenty-five inch stump at roughly $380 to $430. A second guide says grinding commonly runs $75 to $400 per stump, or roughly $2 to $5 per inch of diameter.

Those are national numbers, and the two guides do not agree with each other, which is a useful warning. Some of the figures are undated, and local labor and fuel costs differ. Quotes vary; a provider who sees the job gives the real number.

What drives the price

Cost guides agree on a handful of things that matter most.

  • Size. Many providers price by the diameter of the stump, measured across the top. Wider stumps take more time and wear the cutting teeth faster.
  • Access. A stump in an open front yard is easy. A stump behind a locked gate, past a narrow side yard or under a low branch is slow, may need smaller equipment and can need a second worker. One guide ranks access as the single biggest factor.
  • Wood type. Hard, dense wood takes longer to grind than soft wood. The same guide says very hard wood takes much longer than a soft stump.
  • Number of stumps. More stumps means more time, but the price per stump often drops when several are done together.
  • Surface roots. Large roots above ground add work. Some providers charge extra for roots or for grinding below the usual depth.
  • Cleanup. Chips left in the hole cost less than chips hauled away. If you want soil added and the area leveled, say so up front.

Grinding versus full removal

Grinding and removal are different jobs with different prices. One guide gives grinding at $75 to $400 per stump and full removal at $150 to $800, and calls grinding roughly 40 to 60 percent cheaper. Removal digs out the stump and the larger roots and leaves a large hole that has to be filled and compacted. Grinding chips the stump down, often six to twelve inches below ground, and leaves most of the roots in place to decay.

For a lawn, grinding is usually enough. If you plan to pour a slab, build or plant a new tree in exactly the same spot, ask the provider whether deeper grinding or full removal makes more sense. Our guide to choosing between grinding and removal covers that decision.

A quote checklist

Ask each provider the same questions so the quotes line up.

  1. How many stumps does the quote cover, and is the price per stump or a total?
  2. How deep will the grinder go below ground level?
  3. Are the chips left, spread or hauled away?
  4. Is there a minimum charge for a short visit?
  5. Does the price include large surface roots?
  6. Who will fill and level the hole, and with what?
  7. Who requests the underground utility locate, and when?

Utilities and licensing

A grinder cuts into the ground, so buried lines matter. Louisiana 811 asks for at least two business days of notice before digging, excluding weekends and legal holidays, and says to wait for the markings before you start. The homeowner page also says a locate does not cover private lines, such as service lines laid by a builder that utilities usually have no record of, which a plumber or electrician can help trace. Ask your provider whether they request the locate or expect you to.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry says anyone who performs tree work for a fee, such as removal or pruning, needs an arborist license. That page does not mention stump grinding by name, so we cannot tell you whether a given stump-only job falls under it. If a provider also cuts down or trims a standing tree, you can ask to see the license and look it up on the department's list. Do not assume a rule applies or does not apply; ask the provider.

When the price goes up

A few situations come up often enough that it helps to know them before a provider arrives. Tight access, such as a side yard too narrow for a machine, can push a job to smaller equipment or hand work, which costs more. Stumps close to a house, a fence or a pool leave less room for error. Very large stumps, or ones with big roots spreading above ground, take longer. Rocks, old concrete, nails and wire in the wood can damage cutting teeth and slow the job. If any of these apply to you, say so in your request, with a photo if you can. A quote based on accurate details is less likely to change on the day.

Renting a grinder instead

Rental prices vary by company and by day, and delivery is extra, so ask a rental outlet for current rates. The machine weighs about half a ton and throws chips and debris, and the work needs protective gear, hearing protection and a clear area. Call 811 first, as described above. For one small stump it may pencil out. For a large stump or several, a provider with their own equipment is often simpler. Our guide on storm-damaged trees and stumps lists the safety points.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to grind several stumps at once?

Often, yes. Providers usually spend less time per stump when they do several in one visit, because setup and travel are shared. Ask whether the quote has a per-stump price or a total, and list every stump in your request.

Does the quote include hauling away the chips?

Not always. Some providers leave the chips in the hole or in a pile for you to use as mulch, and others charge to haul them away. Ask, and get the answer on the quote.

Will the price change if the stump has big roots at the surface?

It can. Some providers charge extra for large surface roots or for grinding deeper than usual. Mention roots and your plans for the spot when you ask for a quote.

Should I get more than one quote?

Two or three is reasonable. Compare the same things on each: how many stumps, how deep the grind goes, chip cleanup and any minimum charge.
